The Human Race (2013) Review by Coventry from the Draconian Swamp of Unholy Souls
It's more or less "The Most Dangerous Game" meets "Battle Royale" witha touch of "Predator" in this refreshing Sci-Fi/survival horror fromPaul Hough, son of the underrated and cool genre director John Hough("Legend of Hell House", "Twins of Evil", "American Gothic") who alsoco-produced the film. Allegedly very reminiscent to a short story byStephen King that I haven't read myself, "The Human Race" is arudimental but nevertheless highly effective hour and a half adrenalinshot of which the entire plot allows itself to be described in onesimple three-word sentence: race or die! 80 random and very diversepeople are plucked out their metropolitan turf and, following ablinding bright light, transferred to a peculiar and unknown racecircuit. They each hear a recording of the basic rules in their heads:"The school, the house and the prison are safe. Follow the arrows oryou will die. Stay on the path or you will die. If you're lapped twice,you will die. If you step on the grass, you will die. Purely driven byfear and survival instinct, the contestants metamorphose intonarcissistic and cowardly minions of the superior force and even theremaining few humanitarians (including a war veteran and a deaf-mutegirl) don't manage to bring any sense of calm or unity in the group."The Human Race" actually must have been a very easy movie to make.Plot, logic and plausibility are all quickly pushed into the backgroundthrough fast-paced action, violence and shocking imagery. Admittedly,though, Paul Hough does a terrific job providing these elements inmassive portions. Every runner who breaks one of the rules slowlywitnesses his/her own head exploding. There are 80 runners and therecan be only one winner, so you do the bloodshed math! The shockingstrong point of the race is that all runners are equal and the rulesare relentless… In other words, the heads that are exploding left rightand center belong to elderly people as well as young children, cancersurvivors and even pregnant women. To make the whole thing extrasadistic, some of the pivot characters are extendedly introduced at thebeginning of the film, so that you develop sympathy for them. It's abrutal film with monotonous but revolting gore effects and nastycharacters. The climax is a big disillusion, especially because at somepoints during the film I feared what the explanation would be and hopedfor something more original. Alas, the ending is dull and predictable,but don't let this minor default prevent you from Streaminging this roughthriller.

It kept me entertained throughout, the script was very clever, takingyou down unexpected routes. It gave you an insight into human behaviourwhen in a life or death situation, some of it very unexpected. Therewas also an appropriate level of humour at the right time and a goodbalance of insight into some of the central characters. It was alsovery refreshing to see a broad mix of characters with different levelsof abilities, this isn't something you see very often. It left alasting impression, which is what you want from a film and you wereable to interpret the meaning of it in different ways. The ending leftyou wanting more and to find out more. The soundtrack was also verygood and complemented the film perfectly. This is a must see film!
